The "Digital Revolution of Devarattam" app is a groundbreaking project aimed at preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Devarattam, a traditional folk dance from Tamil Nadu. This initiative is dedicated to the legends of Devarattam, including the esteemed recipients of prestigious awards: Kalaimamani Mr. M Kumararaman, a retired teacher; Kalaimani Mr. M Kannan Kumar; and Kalaimani Mr. K Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti, who have been honored with the Kalaimamani, Kalaimani, and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awards, respectively. Additionally, the app is dedicated to my guru, Mr. E Rajakamulu, and other beloved figures who have contributed significantly to this art form.
The primary goal of the Devarattam app is to spread awareness about Devarattam and celebrate its awardees. The app includes detailed descriptions of Devarattam and its practitioners, highlighting the dance's historical and contemporary significance. Devarattam, historically performed by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community, features a complex repertoire of dance steps. The basic form consists of 32 steps, with additional steps ranging up to 72, which serve as variations of the fundamental movements.
Performers of Devarattam captivate audiences by dancing with a kerchief in each hand and wearing Salangai (anklets) on each leg. They dance to the rhythm of the Deva Thunthumi, a traditional musical instrument integral to the performance, enhancing the immersive experience of this vibrant folk dance.
