Alien: Earth premieres its first two episodes on August 12 on Hulu at 8pm ET, and on FX and Disney+ internationally at 8pm PT / ET. New episodes of the eight-episode season will debut each following Tuesday.
Set in the year 2120, which is well after the events of Prometheus and just two years before the happenings in Alien and the ill-fated journey of the Nostromo, Noah Hawley's Alien: Earth introduces us to a world where the deep space research vessel USCSS Maginot crash-lands on Earth. The story follows a young woman named Wendy (Sydney Chandler) and a group of tactical soldiers as they make a discovery that brings them face-to-face with Earth's greatest threat.
For context, the recently released Alien: Romulus is an interquel set between Alien and Aliens.
In this timeline, Earth is governed by five major corporations: Weyland-Yutani (the notorious corporation from the Alien franchise), Prodigy, Lynch, Dynamic, and Threshold. Cyborgs and synthetics live alongside humans, but the landscape shifts when Prodigy's CEO invents hybrids—humanoid robots with human consciousness. Wendy is the first of these hybrid prototypes, symbolizing a significant step in the ongoing quest for immortality, a recurring theme in the Alien universe.
An intriguing detail is that after Weyland-Yutani’s spaceship collides with Prodigy City, Wendy and her fellow hybrids encounter mysterious life forms described as "more terrifying than anyone could have ever imagined." In January last year, showrunner Noah Hawley explained his decision to not use the backstory provided in Prometheus for Alien: Earth. He expressed a preference for the "retro-futurism" of the original films and, after discussing "many, many elements" of the Alien series with Ridley Scott, chose to distance himself from the bioweapon backstory in favor of the lore established in the earlier movies.
The Alien franchise continues to expand with Alien: Romulus 2 in development, and a crossover with the Predator franchise in Predator: Badlands also on the horizon.
