Aptoide, the independent app store, is now freely available on iOS for EU users. While claiming to be the first free alternative app store on iOS, the Epic Games Store technically launched first. However, Aptoide might be considered the first general, third-party storefront.
Apple's tight control over its iOS ecosystem has long limited app store alternatives. However, following legal battles and the Epic Games Store's iOS launch, Aptoide has entered the market.
We previously covered Aptoide's beta in mid-2024. Now, all EU iOS users can download it. While Aptoide makes a bold claim, the Epic Games Store's earlier release should be noted.
Aptoide's key differentiator lies in its broader app selection, extending beyond gaming. A unique feature allows users to choose specific app versions, a capability previously exclusive to Android and now a highlight of their iOS offering.
A Different Perspective
While the above might seem subtly critical, Aptoide arguably holds a strong claim to being the first true alternative, especially considering its beta period. The Epic Games Store, while not owned by Apple or Google, is still operated by a major industry player.
The ongoing Epic v Apple case and the subsequent opening of the iOS market are positive developments. Aptoide's success will depend on its ability to attract users dissatisfied with the Apple App Store.
