Sarah Michelle Gellar expressed her hope that the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot includes the original cast—including every character who has died.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Gellar shared her vision for the new series, explaining she'd like a blend of fresh and familiar storylines with a tone lighter than that of Seasons 6 and 7.
Gellar will serve as an executive producer and star in the pilot episode before transitioning to a recurring role, as she passes the Slayer mantle to new lead Ryan Kiera Armstrong. However, she may not be the only original cast member returning for the reboot.
"It will be lighter than the last few seasons of the original," Gellar remarked. "We aim to balance new and returning characters. My dream is to bring back every character who died, while still leaving room for new stories."
Gellar's comments mark the first indication that other classic characters could return, and the possibility of resurrecting deceased figures opens up intriguing narrative opportunities.
Although major character deaths were uncommon in the original Buffy, later seasons saw the tragic loss of beloved witch Tara, and the series finale claimed former demon Anya.

The spin-off Angel, however, featured several character deaths, including some who originated in Buffy. Cordelia, the cheerleader turned seer, died in later episodes, and Wesley, the Watcher turned rogue demon hunter, fell in the series finale.
In the Buffy universe, death is not always permanent. Numerous actors have returned to play characters who died, became undead, or were resurrected. Buffy herself died multiple times, and several of her closest allies—and lovers—were vampires.
Gellar recently reunited with former co-star Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow, in a video that dispelled rumors of a feud. Fans speculated this might hint at Hannigan's return, though nothing has been confirmed.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally aired from 1997 to 2003, starring Gellar, Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon as Xander, Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia, David Boreanaz as Angel, and Anthony Stewart Head as Giles. The series was created by Joss Whedon, who is not involved in the reboot.
