Critical Role's first major video game project is nearing its announcement, with CEO Travis Willingham stating it could be revealed "any day now."
During an interview with Business Insider, the team discussed their ambitious future plans. While the game's title and its specific connection to the Critical Role universe remain under wraps, Willingham confirmed the development team is "hard at work" on the project.
"Players will actually take control of the story, influencing outcomes not only for their favorite characters but also for new adventures within the world of Exandria," he explained about the video game adaptation.
Willingham, an actor and a core cast member, co-founded the company alongside fellow renowned voice actors like Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, and others. What began as a Dungeons & Dragons show has expanded into a vast creative universe, with the hit Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina, being one of its most popular extensions.
The upcoming video game will complement the group's other projects without necessarily being a direct narrative tie-in. In December 2024, Willingham informed Rolling Stone that the team was in "active pursuit" of developing a Critical Role video game, noting they were "approaching the end of a multi-year journey." It is still uncertain whether the game will follow one of their existing campaign storylines or feature an entirely original tale set in their world.
At that time, Willingham and the Critical Role team anticipated making an official announcement before the end of 2024 or in early 2025. Now, nearly three months into the year, it seems the reveal could indeed happen imminently.
"Our past collaborations with various partners were small tests to gauge the waters," Willingham told Rolling Stone. "Given the current dynamic shifts in the interactive entertainment industry, and seeing how studios are adapting, we're strategically determining our ideal role within that larger ecosystem."
