Should You Fight Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins?

Taking on Lu Bu is no small feat. In my journey through Dynasty Warriors: Origins, it took me over an hour to overcome this legendary warrior. Yet, there are compelling reasons to face him.

Firstly, the bragging rights are immense. Defeating Lu Bu is a prestigious achievement that you can proudly boast about. Secondly, you might not have a choice. If you align with Shu or Wei, you'll be forced to confront him during the Battle of Xiapi in Chapter 4. Moreover, defeating him at the Battle of Hulao Gate not only earns you the "The Strongest" trophy but also unlocks the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd, in the post-game, making the challenge well worth the effort.

Lu Bu’s First Phase

Before engaging Lu Bu, ensure you're equipped with the right gear. A weapon like a sword, capable of multiple hits and staggering him, is essential. Equip Battle Arts that are quick to activate, require minimal Bravery, and have a wide range. I used Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Additionally, accessories like Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell will boost your health and defense, crucial for surviving Lu Bu's powerful attacks. Finally, choose a weapon with a skill that grants Bravery for each Perfect Evade, as this will be your primary Bravery source during the fight.

In most encounters, Lu Bu starts mounted on Red Hare. This phase is relatively straightforward; he'll charge around the battlefield. He's swift, but he'll pause occasionally to rest. Seize these moments to strike with your Battle Arts and then retreat. His attacks have limited AOE, except when Red Hare leaps and crashes down, making them easier to dodge. Once his health drops to 80%, he dismounts, and the real battle begins.

Lu Bu’s Second Phase

On foot, Lu Bu is formidable. His attacks are swift, and he dashes across the battlefield, often surrounded by a red aura, indicating he can't be interrupted. When he charges, he does so in sets of three; evade and prepare for the next charge. If he charges without his spear, he's attempting a grab that can drastically reduce your health, but it's easily evaded like his other charges.

His most lethal move is when he glows orange. With minimal prep time, he'll fire three massive arrows at you three times, juggling you and depleting your health rapidly. Equip a Battle Art like Absconding Slash to cancel this from a distance; close-range arts like Palm Strike won't save you. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergencies, granting you temporary invincibility to survive mistakes.

Lu Bu is surprisingly vulnerable to juggling during this phase. Hitting him repeatedly will quickly charge your Battle Arts and break his Fortitude meter. Stay close to better react to his moves, and remember, evasion is key.

Lu Bu’s Final Phase

Once his health is sufficiently reduced, Lu Bu enters Musou Rage, marking the final phase. He becomes immune to staggering and unleashes relentless attacks. Your goal is to deplete his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Use all your remaining resources: activate Musou attacks, deploy Battle Arts, and strike fast and hard. If he completes his Musou attack, he'll immediately restart it, forcing you to repeat the phase. Break his Fortitude here to finally defeat this formidable foe.

And that's how you defeat Lu Bu in Dynasty Warriors: Origins! The game is now available for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
