Wizards of the Coast has been steadily unveiling their exciting plans for the Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy crossover set to launch this summer. Over the weekend, they showcased a substantial portion of the cards from both the main set and the Commander decks, sparking joy and excitement among fans who are thrilled to see iconic moments from their beloved Final Fantasy games come to life in Magic.

The Universes Beyond collaboration with Final Fantasy offers both the traditional Commander decks and a series of booster packs, resulting in a vast array of cards to explore. The main set spans the entire spectrum of Final Fantasy's mainline series, from Final Fantasy 1 through Final Fantasy 16. The Commander Decks, however, hone in on four specific titles: Final Fantasy 6, 7, 10, and 14, with their respective Commanders being Terra, Cloud, Tidus, and Y'shtola.

For instance, Cecil from Final Fantasy IV features a transformation mechanic, shifting from a Dark Knight to a Paladin. The iconic summons from Final Fantasy are brought to life through a "Saga Creature" system, merging the mechanics of Magic with the thematic elements of Final Fantasy.

Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER, showcases artwork by Tetsuya Nomura, capturing his transformation across various forms in Final Fantasy 7, culminating in his appearance as Safer Sephiroth on the card Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel.

The adaptation has been met with positive feedback.

Reprints in the set cleverly intertwine with Final Fantasy lore. For example, Skullclamp features artwork inspired by the Jenova project from Final Fantasy 7.

The decks also include cards that reference significant character moments, so be mindful of potential story spoilers when exploring these decks.

On a lighter note, Final Fantasy 10's iconic and often memed moment, the "Inspiring Call," was also included.

Clever Concealment playfully references the Wall Market scene from Final Fantasy 7, featuring Cloud, Aerith, and Tifa in dresses. The Secret Rendezvous card comes in four versions, each depicting a different date scenario from the Golden Saucer in Final Fantasy 7.

The Hildibrand Manderville card, for instance, captures his characteristic disappearing and reappearing antics. Additionally, the Archaeomancer's Map card features a location from a Gaganaskin Treasure Map.

Final Fantasy 14 players have embraced the cards with humor, with memes like "This is Thancred" and creative flavor text additions to cards like Rite of Replication, celebrating memorable in-game speeches.

Honestly, I feel like this was too much flavor text for the MTG collab card...

While the Commander decks received much attention, reveals like Commune With Beavers from the panel have piqued my curiosity about how other Final Fantasy games will be integrated into the broader Magic set.

Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy set is set to launch on June 13, 2025, with a pre-release weekend a week prior.
