Yasumi Matsuno, the creator and director of Final Fantasy Tactics, has shared the origins of the game's story, explaining that he wrote it to bring comfort during an era "robbed of hope."
With the long-rumored Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles finally receiving a release date later this year, Matsuno posted a heartfelt message on X/Twitter, stating that he "offers this story once again"—almost as if speaking directly to the deep social unrest and division we face in 2025.
"Almost three decades ago, the collapse of Japan's economic bubble left the country's financial institutions overwhelmed with bad debt. This led to widespread corporate bankruptcies, a sharp increase in unemployment, and a period of stagnation across Japanese society," Matsuno recalled. "It was a time when hope seemed to vanish, and the value of dreams was often weighed in monetary terms."
"In that historical context, I began to write a story," he continued. "It was the tale of Ramza, a young man who challenged the rigid social hierarchy. It was also the story of Delita, a character who sought to leverage the chaos and despair to elevate his own status. Their intertwined fate explores friendship, betrayal, and a singular destiny."
"Now, in 2025—as inequality and division persist—I present this story again. The strength to resist lies within you."
The Final Fantasy Tactics remaster includes two editions: the original classic, complete with the War of the Lions translation, and a newly enhanced version featuring full voice acting, an updated interface, expanded story content, and polished visuals. It launches for PS5 and PS4 on September 30, 2025.
