Hitman: World of Assassination Reaches 75 Million Players, a Monumental Milestone for IO Interactive
IO Interactive proudly announced that Hitman: World of Assassination has surpassed a remarkable 75 million players. This achievement, described as "monumental" by the studio, solidifies the title's position as potentially their most successful game to date.
It's important to note that World of Assassination isn't a single game, but a compilation of the three most recent Hitman titles. This strategic bundling, launched in January 2023 for PC and consoles and later on Meta Quest 3 in September 2024, significantly boosted player numbers. The success likely stems from a combination of factors, including the individual sales of each game within the trilogy (with Hitman 3 potentially being a major contributor), and the availability of the game on Xbox Game Pass for two years (until January 2024).
The Free Starter Pack, available since the 2021 release, and free demos for the first two trilogy entries, also played a significant role in expanding the game's reach. These accessibility options likely contributed substantially to the impressive 75 million player count.
Future of the Hitman Franchise
While Hitman: World of Assassination continues to receive regular content updates, including Elusive Targets, IO Interactive is currently focused on other projects. The studio is not actively developing a new Hitman game at this time. Instead, their efforts are directed towards Project 007, a James Bond game in development since 2020, and Project Fantasy, a new IP announced in 2023 that explores a fantastical setting. This signifies a strategic shift for IO Interactive, venturing beyond their established Hitman franchise.
