"Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link Mobile Game Cancelled; Square Enix Focuses on 'Kingdom Hearts 4'"

Fans of the Kingdom Hearts series received mixed news recently. The much-anticipated GPS-based action-RPG for mobile, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, has been officially canceled. This game was set to transport players to the enchanting realm of Scala ad Caelum, featuring a brand-new story centered around the ongoing battle against the Heartless. It was originally scheduled for release in 2024.

In an unsigned statement shared via the game's X/Twitter account, Square Enix expressed deep regret over the cancellation. "We wish to convey our heartfelt apologies to everyone who has been looking forward to the start of service," the statement read. Despite the team's efforts to develop and refine the game to ensure enjoyment for a wide audience, Square Enix concluded that it would be challenging to deliver a service that would satisfy players over an extended period. The statement did not specify the exact issues that led to this decision.

Square Enix also took the opportunity to thank those who participated in the multiple closed beta tests and reiterated their gratitude for the support received. "We are truly sorry to have to make this announcement," they added.

However, the statement ended on a hopeful note for Kingdom Hearts enthusiasts. Square Enix confirmed that the series would continue, and they are diligently working on Kingdom Hearts 4. "We are hard at work on Kingdom Hearts 4, and hope you'll continue to support the series as you keep an eye out for further updates," the company stated.

This update marks the first official mention of Kingdom Hearts 4 in months, the last being a tiny, cryptic tease back in January. Despite its reveal in September 2022 with a full cinematic trailer, Square Enix has remained largely silent on the project. This quiet period is not uncommon for the series, which has a tradition of leaving fans eager for more.

Series director Tetsuya Nomura has hinted that Kingdom Hearts 4 will mark a significant milestone after 22 years and 18 games, aiming to shift the Kingdom Hearts narrative towards its conclusion. This promise adds an exciting layer of anticipation for fans as they await further developments on this long-awaited sequel.
