The beloved Suikoden series is making a return, albeit in a different form. Konami, in collaboration with MYTHRIL, has unveiled Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG set to launch on Android and iOS platforms. This free-to-play game is expected to hit the market later this year, though an exact release date hasn't been announced yet.
For those unfamiliar, Suikoden has been enchanting gamers since its debut in 1995. Developed and published by Konami, and crafted by Yoshitaka Murayama, the series draws inspiration from the classical Chinese novel Water Margin, known as Suikoden in Japanese. Spanning 11 entries, including spin-offs, the last installment was released back in 2012. Now, instead of a direct sequel or a full revival, fans are greeted with Suikoden STAR LEAP, a mobile game.
What’s in Store?
Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh ensemble of characters while maintaining the series' iconic tradition of assembling 108 heroes. The game retains the nostalgic charm of Suikoden with its pixel art style, which you can see in the teaser trailer below.
The narrative centers around the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes that are said to have shaped the world. The protagonist, Hou, the son of a village chief, experiences his first successful hunt, only for his village to be attacked shortly after. This catastrophe sets Hou on a journey to restore peace, accompanied by Hisui, his servant with a mysterious emotional suppression; Shirin, his childhood friend with a strong sense of justice; and Shapur, a former general now serving as a butler.
While not all fans are thrilled about the shift to a mobile gacha game, especially after a long wait for a proper continuation, the true impact of Suikoden STAR LEAP will only be clear once it's released. Until then, keep an eye on the official website for the latest updates.
