Tidepool Games has launched a new fast-paced pixel art roguelike with 'snake-like' mechanics on Android. Titled MageTrain, the game will feel familiar to fans of Nimble Quest, as it draws significant inspiration from the classic title.
What's MageTrain Like?
MageTrain blends Snake mechanics with auto-battler and roguelike elements. You command a chain of heroes that trail behind your lead character in a snake-like formation. While moving through arenas, each hero automatically attacks enemies as you navigate.
Gameplay revolves around strategic positioning - you must carefully manage your hero train while avoiding enemy collisions and environmental hazards. Positioning matters significantly, as each hero's abilities change based on whether they're leading the pack or following behind.
The launch version features nine unique heroes, including one unconventional character who throws birds. Each hero possesses distinct skills that activate differently depending on their position in the formation.
Players progress through eight diverse dungeons, facing off against 28 enemy types while collecting 30 different skills to enhance their team. Gold and power-ups can be gathered throughout each run.
True to its roguelike nature, MageTrain offers procedurally generated experiences. Players navigate branching paths, select upgrades, and fight to prolong each run. The structure parallels popular roguelikes like Slay the Spire or FTL - there are no traditional levels or save points. Failure means starting fresh, whether from a collision or being overpowered by enemies.

Fast-Paced Action
The game maintains high replayability through its progression system. Even failed runs contribute to player growth, teaching valuable lessons about risk assessment, offensive strategies, and survival tactics.
MageTrain is currently available as a free download on Android through the Google Play Store.
