If you were eagerly awaiting Gears of War: E-Day news during Xbox Games Showcase 2025, prepare for disappointment. Microsoft's major franchises took a backseat this year - no updates surfaced for Forza, Halo, or the much-anticipated Fable reboot.
Xbox chief Phil Spencer did offer a consolation prize, revealing 2026 as the target year for Gears of War: E-Day and the next Forza installment, coinciding with Xbox's 25th anniversary celebrations.
The anticipated prequel to the legendary shooter franchise first got revealed at last year's Xbox Games Showcase 2024. Set 14 years before the original Gears of War, E-Day serves as an origin story for fan-favorite duo Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, with original voice actors John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro returning.
"Gears of War: E-Day represents more than just our next big release," Coalition studio head Mike Crump emphasized in previous statements. "It's about recapturing the essence that made this franchise legendary."
Development insights revealed earlier this year showed People Can Fly - the studio behind Bulletstorm and Gears of War: Judgment - joining forces with The Coalition as co-developers on this ambitious project.
While Gears fans may need to wait another year, Spencer did tease Halo fans with hints of a potential remake of the original title during the showcase. For complete coverage of today's announcements, check out our full Xbox Games Showcase June 2025 roundup.
