The Future of The Last of Us Franchise
Naughty Dog Hints at Series Conclusion

The Last of Us (TLOU) may not receive another sequel, potentially leaving The Last of Us Part II as the finale to the acclaimed post-apocalyptic series. In a March 2025 interview with Variety, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann addressed questions about The Last of Us Part 3.
Druckmann stated, "I'll just say this — don't count on seeing more 'Last of Us' games. This might be all there is." These comments cast doubt on the franchise's gaming future as Naughty Dog focuses on expanding the television adaptation.
During the 2025 DICE Summit, Druckmann shared his philosophy on sequels with IGN: "I never plan ahead for multiple games. When developing The Last of Us Part II, I occasionally considered potential directions for future installments, but my approach is to treat each project as if it might be the last. I don't hold back ideas for hypothetical sequels."
This stance strongly suggests that the video game series may have reached its conclusion, particularly given Part II's relatively definitive ending. However, fans can still anticipate season 2 of the HBO adaptation premiering April 13, 2025.
New Intellectual Property in Development

While TLOU's gaming future appears uncertain, Naughty Dog revealed at The Game Awards 2024 that they're developing an entirely new IP called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet for PlayStation 5.
The announcement featured a teaser highlighting the game's science fiction elements. According to studio information, development began in 2020, representing what may be Naughty Dog's most ambitious narrative project to date. The studio hasn't shared additional details since the initial reveal.
Last of Us Online Cancellation Paves Way for New Project

The previously reported cancellation of The Last of Us Online resulted from Naughty Dog's decision to concentrate on single-player experiences, with Intergalactic becoming the mystery project hinted at during that time.
Former Sony Interactive Entertainment President Shuhei Yoshida explained on the Sacred Symbols+ podcast (February 2025) how Destiny developer Bungie consulted with Sony about the realities of live-service games, ultimately influencing the decision to cancel TLOU Online in favor of Intergalactic.
Yoshida recalled: "Naughty Dog passionately pursued The Last of Us Online, but Bungie's insights into the extensive long-term commitment required for live-service games made the studio realize they couldn't simultaneously develop Intergalactic."
With Druckmann's comments and the online game's cancellation, Naughty Dog appears to be stepping back from the franchise — at least temporarily. Fans can still look forward to The Last of Us Part II Remastered launching on PC April 3, 2025. For the latest updates on the remaster, explore our coverage below.
