As speculation swirls around the future of The Last of Us video game franchise, fans are wondering where the storyline could advance after HBO's upcoming Seasons 2 and 3 finish adapting the events of the second game. Earlier this month, series creator Neil Druckmann cast uncertainty over the possibility of a third installment, stating, “Honestly, all I’ll say is don’t count on seeing more from 'The Last of Us.' This might very well be the end.”
But if The Last of Us 3 never materializes, would Naughty Dog and Druckmann continue the TV adaptation beyond the existing games?
That’s the question IGN posed to Druckmann on the red carpet ahead of The Last of Us Season 2’s premiere, and he replied by explaining that although he has an ending for The Last of Us narrative in mind, the uncertainty around developing The Last of Us 3 means he isn’t holding anything back.
“I need to have an ending in place,” Druckmann said. “When I created The Last of Us Part I, I had no idea if a sequel would follow, so it had to feel definitive. The same mindset applied when working on Uncharted 4—I didn’t know if we’d ever return to it, so it needed a solid conclusion. With The Last of Us Part II, I approached it identically. Everything has to feel complete.
“I don’t know how much longer I’ll be doing this or if I’ll even get another chance. So I hold nothing back.
“Currently, we have an ending in mind, and that ending will serve as the conclusion—the definitive finale for this story.”
Another lingering question involves whether Druckmann would even have the bandwidth to develop The Last of Us 3, should it be approved. This is partly due to his current commitments to The Last of Us TV series, which will fully adapt The Last of Us Part II across Seasons 2 and 3, as well as the recently announced PlayStation title, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
“As for everything else—when you ask about future games—so much of my time is tied up finishing this season,” Druckmann added. “We’re not completely done yet, but we’re close. Hopefully, we’ll get to do it again. For Season 3, we still have a lot more story to tell, as anyone familiar with the second game knows.
“And after that, I’m heavily occupied with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.”

In February 2024, Druckmann hinted at a potential concept for The Last of Us 3 during the documentary Grounded 2: Making The Last of Us Part 2, suggesting there is “likely one more chapter to this story.”
“The first game had a very clear theme—the unconditional love between a parent and child,” he explained. “For Part II, once we landed on the idea of pursuing justice regardless of the sacrifices, it felt like a strong, clear concept that connected back to the love theme of the original. If we never revisited the series, this would still feel like a satisfying conclusion—the final piece of the story.
“The advantage of working at Naughty Dog is that we aren't forced into sequels,” he continued. “We’d love to create another The Last of Us, but if the team feels passionate about something different, the studio supports that. It’s a privilege I never take for granted. I’ve been reflecting for years—searching for a compelling concept. And recently, something shifted. I don’t have the full story yet, but I do have that core idea—something as gripping as the first two games, yet entirely its own, while still connecting all three parts. So yes, it does seem like there’s probably one final chapter left to tell.”
