Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has launched its eagerly anticipated final patch, signaling the end of its remarkable journey. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios unveiled BG3’s Patch 8, the last major update for the game. The finality of this update has spurred a notable increase in player numbers, pushing BG3 just outside of Steam’s top 10 most played games. Previously hovering around 60,000 concurrent players, the game has now surged to over 169,000 players.
Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke celebrated the sudden rise in players via a tweet on April 22, attributing the growth to the game’s thriving mod support. This allows the studio to shift focus to their next project. It has been confirmed that Larian Studios will move away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new ventures.
As a result, D&D owner Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently engaging with other studios to potentially develop a Baldur’s Gate 4.
12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!
Patch 8, announced in November 2024, has been a long time coming. This comprehensive update introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play, and numerous other enhancements. Larian Studios provided a detailed breakdown of the patch’s contents on the BG3 website. Compared to the initial announcement, the final patch notes boast an extended list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring that BG3 concludes on a high note.
Larian Studios has poured considerable effort into refining BG3, evident in the extensive list of fixes and updates included in this final version. Despite this being their last major patch, Larian remains committed to supporting the game's modding community.
