Path of Exile 2 developer Grinding Gear Games (GGG) has implemented further emergency updates to address the community's backlash against the Dawn of the Hunt expansion. The update, which launched earlier this month, introduced the new Huntress class along with five new ascension classes: the Ritualist, Amazon, Smith of Kitava, Tactician, and Lich. Additionally, it brought over a hundred new unique items and expanded crafting options. However, the community's response was overwhelmingly negative, as reflected in the 'mostly negative' Steam reviews, citing the game's significantly slowed pace as a major issue.
The backlash was fueled by complaints about elongated boss fights, underwhelming skill damage, and overall sluggish gameplay. Players criticized the forced combo gameplay and the reduced loot drops, feeling that these changes stifled the freedom and enjoyment that the game is known for. One player, with over 5,000 hours in the original Path of Exile, expressed disappointment but remained hopeful that future updates could restore the game's appeal.
In response, GGG has released patch notes for the upcoming 0.2.0e update, scheduled for April 11. This patch aims to address many of the community's concerns, including:
- Monster Speed Changes: Adjustments to prevent monsters from relentlessly pursuing players, reducing the frequency of interrupt events during attacks, and modifying monster behavior to allow players more time to engage.
- Act-Specific Adjustments: Specific changes to monster density and behavior in Acts 1, 2, and 3 to alleviate player frustration.
- Boss Changes: Tweaks to make certain boss fights less challenging and more enjoyable, such as reducing the intensity of Viper Napuatzi's Chaos Rains and modifying Uxmal's behavior.
- Player Minion Changes: Adjustments to minion revive timers and other mechanics to improve player experience with minions.
- Other Player Balance: Minor changes to support skills and fixes to existing issues.
- Crafting Changes: Completion of mod additions to runes for caster weapons and the introduction of a new feature at Renly's shop.
- Performance Improvements: Optimizations to improve game performance.
GGG has also outlined further changes to be implemented after the weekend, including enhancements to the charm system and the introduction of new features like Stash Tab Affinities and Atlas Bookmarks. These updates are part of GGG's ongoing efforts to address player feedback and restore the game's popularity.
The question remains whether these changes will be sufficient to reverse the negative sentiment and bring Path of Exile 2 back to a positive trajectory. Despite the challenges, the game's initial launch was highly successful, attracting a massive player base, though this success also strained the game's infrastructure and impacted development for Path of Exile 1.
