Ryan Gosling's highly anticipated sci-fi thriller, Project Hail Mary, won't hit theaters until 2026—yet it's already off to an incredible start by smashing a remarkable record long before its official release.
Director Phil Lord recently announced that the film's trailer has soared past 400 million views, making it the most-watched trailer for any original film (not a sequel or remake) within just one week of its debut.
Lord shared the exciting news on social media, writing, "Holy moly! A huge thank you to all the amazing fans of movies, books, near-light-speed space travel, and the Sun for helping the Project Hail Mary trailer cross 400 million views—the highest one-week total ever for an original, non-sequel film trailer." His celebratory post featured a special graphic highlighting the milestone and included a new image of Gosling from the movie.

He added, "Can't wait to thank some of you in person at San Diego Comic-Con in Hall H alongside Ryan, Andy, Drew, and a few other surprises…" Lord will be joined at the event by Gosling, co-director Chris Miller, original book author Andy Weir, and screenwriter Drew Goddard. As for what surprises they have planned, fans will need to wait until SDCC to find out.
Project Hail Mary marks the second adaptation of Weir’s work, following 20th Century Fox’s The Martian starring Matt Damon. That earlier film was a massive box office success, earning around $630 million worldwide. So it's no surprise that Amazon MGM Studios is backing another adaptation—and that this new project is already attracting so much buzz.
Also starring Sandra Hüller, Lionel Boyce, Ken Leung, and Milana Vayntrub, Project Hail Mary is scheduled for release on March 20, 2026.
