Pine: Woodworker

Pine: A Story of Loss has just dropped on Android. It’s an interactive story and video game by Fellow Traveller and Made Up Games. The game takes you on a sad journey with the protagonist while its art might remind you of games like Monument Valley.

It’s a Journey Through Grief, Memory and Hope

The setup of Pine: A Story of Loss is simple but deep. You play as a woodworker chilling in a gorgeously illustrated forest glade. On the surface, he’s just trying to handle his daily tasks like tending the garden and gathering wood.

But inside, he’s deeply grief-stricken. Memories of his late wife keep interrupting his routine, pulling him into a bunch of bittersweet flashbacks. And instead of pushing them away, he carves them into little wooden mementos, trying to hold onto the love that’s gone.

Pine: A Story of Loss lets you feel the feels. It’s a wordless, interactive short story that you can finish in one sitting. You relive the couple’s happy memories through charming puzzles and mini-games. The carvings you create with the woodworker’s hands have hope woven into them.

The game’s highlight is undoubtedly its hand-drawn art. All of it is by Tom Booth, who has worked with all the big names like DreamWorks, Netflix, Nickelodeon, Supercell and HarperCollins. Teaming up with his friend, programmer Najati Imam, he wanted to tell this story in a way that feels deeply personal.

Will You Try Pine: A Story of Loss Out?

Apart from its art, the game has an apt soundtrack and immersive sound design. Since it doesn’t use any words, you’ll hear the rustle of leaves, the creak of wood and the soft strains of an emotional score which all complement the experience well.

If you like games that are more of experiences wrapped in warm stories, then you might want to try this one out. You can grab the game from the Google Play Store at $4.99.
