Fans yearning to explore the post-Rise of Skywalker era won't have to wait for Shawn Levy's upcoming project after all. While anticipation remains high for Star Wars: Starfighter, devotees will first get to experience this unexplored timeline through Kwame Mbalia's new YA novel Star Wars: The Last Order.
The recently unveiled book will center on fan-favorite characters Finn (John Boyega) and Jannah (Naomi Ackie), delving deeper into their stories following Episode IX. Penguin Random House's official synopsis teases:
"After The Rise of Skywalker, Finn and Jannah intercept a First Order vessel carrying abducted children. As they pursue the responsible officer through the galaxy, these former stormtroopers must confront their complicated pasts serving the oppressive regime."
While marketed as the first canonical story set after Episode IX, Levy's film remains firmly in development. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously confirmed the timeline placement to Deadline:
"All upcoming stories exist beyond the Skywalker Saga's main nine films. Shawn's standalone adventure occurs about five years post-Episode IX."
The project gained momentum at Star Wars Celebration Japan with Ryan Gosling's casting announcement and a confirmed May 28, 2027 release date. Screenwriter Jonathan Tropper recently fueled anticipation, telling Screen Rant: "Expect it sooner than you imagine."
