Exciting news for fans of the Wild West: a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Red Dead Redemption 2 might be hitting the shelves by the end of 2025. Additionally, there are whispers of a next-gen upgrade for the game on PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. According to GameReactor, insiders "close to Rockstar" have confirmed that not only is a Switch 2 version in the works, but a "next-gen upgrade patch" is also being developed to enhance the game's performance on current-gen consoles.
While specifics remain under wraps, GameReactor's sources suggest that both the port and the upgrade patch could launch as early as later this year. This echoes reports from Nintenduo, which states that the Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 is expected to release within Take-Two's current fiscal year, ending March 31, 2026. Whether it will be available digitally or as a physical edition is still up in the air.
When Red Dead Redemption 2 was released in 2018, we at IGN hailed it as a "masterpiece," awarding it a perfect 10/10. Our review praised it as a "meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era." Given this acclaim, it's no shock that the game might be coming to the Switch 2. Following Take-Two's latest financial results, CEO Strauss Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for Nintendo's new platform during a Q&A with investors. He highlighted Nintendo's improved support for third-party publishers, stating, "We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform."
Zelnick elaborated on Take-Two's strategy, saying, "Historically, being a third-party in the Nintendo business has been a bit challenging. I think Nintendo has been very forthcoming in addressing that. And we're stepping up too, because we have great optimism for the platform. In terms of what we would bring to any platform, we address it on a case-by-case basis, we obviously want to be where the consumers are. But we would not necessarily bring every title to every platform. There are also great catalog opportunities as well."

Specifically, Take-Two is bringing Civilization 7 (launching on June 5), the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series (specific titles and release dates TBD), and Borderlands 4 (set for September 12) to the Nintendo Switch 2. These titles are not surprising, as Take-Two has already been publishing these franchises on the original Nintendo Switch. However, Zelnick's comments suggest that the door may be open for additional releases from Take-Two's back catalog. While GTA 6 might not make the cut, there's a possibility for GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2 to join the lineup.
