A Resident Evil real-time strategy game has been revealed for iPhone and Android, crafted in “close collaboration with Capcom to guarantee authenticity and quality.”
Resident Evil Survival Unit is co-developed by Joycity Corporation, a South Korean mobile game studio previously responsible for Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War—another licensed real-time strategy offshoot.
Survival Unit will be fully unveiled next week, but for now, a single piece of concept art released today gives a subtle hint about the game’s setting.
Set against a suitably grim and foreboding tone, a vehicle sits parked in the woods near an advertising billboard for... you guessed it, Umbrella Corporation. The billboard depicts two cheerful individuals, accompanied by the slogan: “Our Business is life itself...”
Umbrella's presence likely places Resident Evil Survival Unit before the events of Resident Evil 4, by which time the sinister organization had already collapsed. Could this be the Arklay Mountains region near Raccoon City? A faint mountain range can be spotted in the background, so it's plausible.
A real-time tactical game could effectively immerse players in the action seen throughout the Resident Evil series, where multiple teams of STARS operatives—characters beloved by fans—must be directed into combat while trying to survive as long as possible.
An accompanying press release notes that Survival Unit is “designed to engage longtime fans and newcomers alike,” suggesting that recognizable characters or iconic locations will appear.
And with the main series returning to Raccoon City in the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem—reportedly continuing the Umbrella storyline—now is an ideal moment to revisit the setting and events that kicked off the franchise.
Resident Evil Survival Unit will be released in Japan, South Korea, North America, Europe, and Asia by anime publisher Aniplex, a Sony subsidiary. Additional details will be shared next week during an online showcase, scheduled to stream on YouTube on July 10.
