IGN Live exclusively premiered the first five minutes of SYFY's upcoming adaptation Revival, along with an interview featuring series co-creator and showrunner Aaron B. Koontz discussing why this unique take on resurrection deserves audience attention.
Revival launches June 12 on SYFY, adapting the Harvey Award-nominated Image Comics series by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton that spanned 47 issues from 2012-2017. Our exclusive clip below introduces audiences to "Revival Day" - when the deceased return inexplicably to life. Crucially, these aren't mindless zombies but fully cognizant individuals unchanged from their living selves.
The opening sequence faithfully recreates the comic's beginning, which Koontz praised as brilliant storytelling: "This scene hooked us immediately when reading the comics," he explained. "What viewers won't realize yet is how these initial moments contain layered foreshadowing that pays off dramatically in later episodes."
One standout moment features an undead individual breaking free during cremation at Randy's Crematorium - a terrifying practical effect rather than CGI. "We committed to ambitious practical effects," Koontz revealed. "Filming in a small Wisconsin town meant emergency services were stretched thin during production - I kept worrying about actual town emergencies!"
The scene introduces Randy (Graeme Barrett), discovered by Koontz on Instagram for his perfect comedic energy contrasting the show's serious themes. "Randy's 'not my fault' line perfectly mirrors protagonist Wayne Cypress's opening dialogue," Koontz noted. "This instantly establishes the Cypress family dynamics that drive the entire series."
Koontz describes the show's tone as balancing horror, melodrama and humor - "Imagine Mare of Easttown meets Fargo" - blending quirky characters with genuine thrills while subverting zombie tropes through its unique premise.
Following its SYFY premiere on June 12, Revival streams on Peacock starting June 19. The ensemble cast includes Melanie Scrofano (Wynonna Earp), David James Elliott (JAG), Andy McQueen (Mrs. Davis), and WWE's CM Punk among others.
The adaptation brings to life Seeley and Norton's acclaimed comic series from Image Comics. Discover more through our exclusive Revival trailer and complete IGN Live coverage.
