The long-awaited sequel to the beloved adventure game, Ōkami, was announced at The Game Awards, sparking widespread fan excitement. While details remain scarce, recent interviews with the project leads have shed some light on the upcoming title.
IGN confirmed that the sequel is a direct continuation of the original Ōkami's storyline. Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi confirmed this, stating it's a "continuation of the story that we saw in the original game." Director Hideki Kamiya playfully hinted at the return of Amaterasu, the great wolf goddess, a confirmation later provided by Hirabayashi.
While this confirmation is unsurprising to many fans, the existence of Ōkamiden, a Nintendo DS prequel starring Amaterasu's child, Chibiterasu, has fueled speculation. Ōkamiden, released with mixed reception due to its platform and the absence of key original team members, including Kamiya, will be addressed. Hirabayashi stated that while they acknowledge the game and its fanbase, the sequel directly follows the original Ōkami's narrative.
The original Ōkami's ending, featuring Amaterasu and another character embarking on a new journey, naturally lends itself to a sequel. This unexplored territory provides ample opportunity for new challenges and adventures for both Amaterasu and the other protagonists.
However, further details are currently unavailable. The sequel is in its very early stages of development, with the early announcement driven by the team's excitement. According to Hirabayashi, significant time will likely pass before any further updates are released.
