Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nears Release, Says Writer

Author : Max May 20,2025

Exciting news for Star Wars fans: Shawn Levy, the acclaimed director of Deadpool & Wolverine, is still hard at work on his upcoming Star Wars film. Jonathan Tropper, the writer behind the project, recently shared his enthusiasm with Screen Rant, stating, "I am [excited] too. I hope it's on the way sooner than you think." While details about the film remain largely under wraps, we do know it will take place after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, marking it as the first Star Wars film to explore the post-Rise of Skywalker era.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has provided some insight into the timeline, noting in a February interview with Deadline that Levy's film is set "all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This places the film firmly in the future of the Star Wars universe. Kennedy also confirmed that the film will hit theaters after 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu, as she is currently producing both projects. Additionally, there are whispers that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this highly anticipated film.

Tropper's comments suggest that the project is gaining momentum, though fans will need to exercise patience as the film is not expected to release until at least the last quarter of 2026, if not 2027. Since the release of the controversial Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has been cautious with its Star Wars films, canceling several projects including one from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. A Star Wars movie initially slated for late 2026 was also removed from Disney's release calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled three new feature films: a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in the Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie helmed by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, featuring Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker. The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight departing after initially taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Despite these shifts, Rey remains a key focus for Disney's future Star Wars projects, with reports indicating she will appear in multiple upcoming films.

Disney's Star Wars plans extend even further, with X-Men producer Simon Kinberg set to write a new trilogy that will not continue the Skywalker Saga as initially thought. Fans eager for more Star Wars content can look forward to Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch.
