Square Enix has officially announced the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link, a mobile game that has been in development since 2019. The news, while surprising to some, did not catch many fans off guard given Square Enix's history of game cancellations. The project had progressed to multiple closed beta tests on both Android and iOS platforms, and as recently as November 2024, the team shared updates on X about the game's delay. Participants in the closed beta tests were particularly taken aback, as the game appeared to be well into its development phase.
Why Was Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link Cancelled?
The development team cited an inability to find a sustainable path forward that would meet player expectations in the long term. Missing-Link was envisioned as a live-service game, but the team struggled to bring this vision to life effectively. The game was to be a unique, GPS-based spinoff where players could explore the world and engage in battles against Heartless using their keyblades, set within a forgotten chapter of the Kingdom Hearts saga. Despite the global appeal of the franchise, the innovative GPS feature and overall concept did not pan out as hoped. Square Enix decided it was better to cancel the project than release a substandard product, opting instead to redirect their efforts.

But Kingdom Hearts IV Is Still Coming!
On a brighter note, Square Enix is fully committed to the development of Kingdom Hearts IV. Announced during the Kingdom Hearts 20th Anniversary event in 2022, the game is making steady progress. Fans disappointed by the cancellation of Missing-Link can find solace in the fact that the main series continues to thrive.
