Sony's policy requiring PSN tethering for even single-player PC games has sparked significant outrage among gamers. This requirement, coupled with regional limitations on service availability, restricts the sale and accessibility of modern Sony releases.
Recently, Sony announced some policy adjustments. While the company hasn't entirely abandoned the concept of PSN tethering, it will be relaxed for certain titles.
PSN tethering will be optional in the following games:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- God of War Ragnarök
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
Players who choose to tether their accounts to PSN will receive the following incentives:
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Early access to the "2099" suit line for Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
- God of War Ragnarök: Access to the Black Bear armor set, the "Lost Things" chest at the game's start, and a resource pack.
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered: Bonus points to unlock features.
- Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered: The Nora Valiant costume.
In November, responding to investor inquiries, COO Hiroki Totoki acknowledged the backlash against PSN connection requirements. He maintained that this is crucial for security and order, framing the restriction in terms of service-based games. However, he offered no explanation as to how single-player titles like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarök benefit from enhanced security through mandatory PSN account linking.
Times have changed, and this policy remains a point of contention.
