Relic Entertainment has thrilled fans with the announcement of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Definitive Edition, a refreshed version of the iconic 20-year-old real-time strategy (RTS) classic. Set to launch on PC through Steam and GOG later this year, this edition promises to deliver the beloved original gameplay, now enhanced for today's hardware. For a deep dive into what this means for fans, check out IGN's exclusive interview with design director Philippe Boulle.
The Dawn of War community has been vocal about wanting a revival of the series, and with the first game often hailed as one of the best, if not the best, Warhammer 40,000 titles ever, the Definitive Edition could be the perfect starting point. Fans are hopeful that Relic will leverage this release to pave the way for a new installment, possibly Dawn of War 4.
The Definitive Edition is a comprehensive package, featuring all content from the original Dawn of War and its standalone expansions. This includes four classic campaigns, nine armies, and over 200 maps, all integrated into a single game. Players can expect 4K support, upscaled textures that are four times the resolution of the originals, and image-based lighting for enhanced visual fidelity while maintaining the classic experience. Improvements in world lighting, unit reflections, and shadows, along with new unit gloss and emissive lighting, promise to enrich the moment-to-moment gameplay.
Further enhancements include a camera that can pull back further for a broader view of the battlefield, and an optimized HUD and screen layout designed for widescreen displays. The game has also been upgraded to a 64-bit platform, ensuring compatibility with over two decades of community mods, supporting the ongoing efforts of the modding community.
