Launching Later This Year!
Microsoft shocked audiences by revealing two Xbox-branded handhelds developed with Asus during their 2025 showcase. The Xbox Ally and its premium Xbox Ally X counterpart merge Xbox gaming with Windows functionality in a streamlined portable format. In a jaw-dropping moment, attendees even saw Hollow Knight: Silksong running live on one device - proving its long-awaited existence.
Codenamed Project Kennan, these collaborative devices were engineered to deliver a unified gaming experience. Both models boot directly into an optimized Xbox interface that organizes your entire game library, including titles from Game Pass, Steam, Epic Store, and Battle.net.
The white Xbox Ally serves as the entry model, featuring 720p gaming capabilities powered by AMD's Ryzen Z2 A chip, 16GB LPDDR5X RAM, and 512GB SSD storage.
The black Xbox Ally X pushes performance further with 900p-1080p gaming, packing AMD's advanced Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip (including a 50 TOPS NPU), 24GB high-speed RAM, and 1TB SSD - all displayed on a vibrant 7-inch 1080p 120Hz screen.
Microsoft's Shawn Yen highlighted their focus on efficiency, stating: "Our superpower is optimization." The Ally X incorporates an impressive 80Wh battery - among the largest in any handheld - while the base model features a substantial 60Wh capacity (50% larger than the original ROG Ally). Combined with a lightweight Windows 11 version that minimizes background processes, both devices promise extended play sessions and smoother performance.
The Silksong appearance stole the show, electrifying online audiences. With powerful hardware, an intuitive console interface, and major game reveals, these devices are set to shake up the portable PC market. The gauntlet has been thrown - how will Steam Deck respond?
