After Musk's confession this week, fans of both games have expressed their frustration and disappointment on forums, questioning the integrity of the games and the enforcement of their terms of service. A Path of Exile player voiced concerns on the game's official forum, questioning whether the developers were prioritizing publicity over fairness. Similarly, on Battle.net, players have called out the apparent inconsistency in rule enforcement, especially given Musk's high-profile status.
When approached for comment by IGN, both Grinding Gear Games and Blizzard declined to discuss individual account actions or potential enforcement measures.
Musk has previously boasted about his gaming achievements, including claiming to be among the top players in Diablo 4 and having a hardcore level 97 character in Path of Exile 2. He has cited gaming as a way to unwind from his demanding roles at Tesla, SpaceX, X/Twitter, and now as Donald Trump's efficiency tsar. However, recent scrutiny of his gameplay and understanding of game mechanics has led to doubts about his claims, culminating in his admission of using account boosting services.
In a direct message conversation revealed by the player NikoWrex, Musk admitted to account boosting, arguing it was necessary to compete with Asian players. Despite this, he insisted that any gameplay shown in his videos or streams was his own. Musk also clarified that he never claimed credit for the high-level achievements in Path of Exile 2, emphasizing that top accounts often require multiple players.
In defense of Musk, musician Grimes, who shares three children with him, highlighted his gaming accomplishments she witnessed firsthand, including his achievements in Diablo and other games.
Further allegations of cheating surfaced when Musk's Path of Exile 2 character was seen active while he was attending Trump's inauguration in Washington, adding to the controversy surrounding his gaming activities.
