**Players & Cards**
Tong-its is exclusively for three players, using a standard 52-card Anglo-American deck without jokers. The card rankings are: Ace (1 point), 2-10 (face value), Jack, Queen, and King (10 points each).
**Objective**
The goal is to form sets and runs by drawing and discarding cards, minimizing the points of unmatched cards in your hand. A run is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., ♥4, ♥5, ♥6 or ♠8, ♠9, ♠10, ♠J). Aces are low, so A-K-Q is not a run. A set is three or four cards of the same rank (e.g., ♥7, ♣7, ♦7). Each card can only be part of one combination at a time.
**The Deal**
The initial dealer is chosen randomly, with subsequent dealers being the winners of the previous hand. Cards are dealt counterclockwise: the dealer gets 13 cards, and the other players receive 12 each. The remaining cards form the stock, placed face down.
**The Play**
Each turn includes:
- **Draw:** You must take a card from either the stock or the top of the discard pile. If from the discard pile, you must create and expose a meld immediately.
- **Exposing Melds:** Optionally, expose valid melds (sets or runs) on the table. Melding from the stock is not mandatory. To open your hand, you must lay at least one meld. A special move allows you to lay a set of four face down without drawing from the discard pile, keeping the set secret and earning bonus payments.
- **Laying Off (Sapaw):** Optionally, add cards to existing melds, yours or others', with no limit on the number of cards you can lay off in a turn. Laying off on another player's meld prevents them from calling Draw next turn.
- **Discard:** End your turn by discarding one card face up on the discard pile.
