Gordang Sambilan is a traditional art form of the Batak Mandailing people. The term "Gordang" means drum or large drum, while "Sambilan" means nine. This art consists of nine drums or large drums of varying lengths and diameters, each producing a different pitch. Gordang Sambilan is typically played by six people, with the smallest drums, numbers 1 and 2, serving as the taba-taba; drum 3 as the tepe-tepe; drum 4 as the kudong-kudong; drum 5 as the kudong-kudong nabalik; drum 6 as the pasilion; and drums 7, 8, and 9 as the jangat. Originally, Gordang Sambilan was performed only during sacred events. However, with the evolution of social culture, it is now commonly heard at weddings, welcoming ceremonies, and major celebrations. As a significant part of Indonesia's cultural heritage, Gordang Sambilan has even been performed at the presidential palace.
