Borderlands 4 Ditches Open-World Format

Borderlands fans eagerly await the fourth installment of the popular looter-shooter series. Early trailers showcased significant advancements, including enhanced scale and exploration options. However, Gearbox Software clarifies that it's not a fully open-world game.

Co-founder Randy Pitchford emphasized that "open world" is an inaccurate descriptor for Borderlands 4, citing inappropriate connotations. While Pitchford didn't detail the specifics, the game distinguishes between guided gameplay sequences and free-form exploration.

Despite this, Borderlands 4 is poised to be the franchise's largest entry yet. Players will enjoy seamless traversal across all explorable areas. To avoid aimless wandering, developers have focused on creating a more structured and engaging experience within the expansive game world.

While a precise release date remains unannounced, a 2025 launch is anticipated. Borderlands 4 will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
