AI Performances: Nicolas Cage Warns of Dead End

Author : Allison Feb 20,2025

Nicolas Cage has issued a stark warning against the use of artificial intelligence in acting, asserting that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards "a dead end." He believes that AI cannot authentically portray the human condition.

During his Saturn Awards acceptance speech for Best Actor (Dream Scenario), Cage voiced his concerns about the burgeoning AI landscape. He emphasized his belief in the irreplaceable role of human creativity and emotion in artistic expression. He stated that allowing AI to manipulate even a small aspect of a performance would ultimately compromise the integrity and truth of the art, replacing it with mere financial gain.

Cage argued that the purpose of art, including acting, is to reflect the complexities of the human experience through a thoughtful and emotional creative process – a process he believes AI is incapable of replicating. He fears that AI-driven performances would lack heart, ultimately resulting in bland and unrelatable portrayals of life. He urged actors to safeguard their authentic expressions from AI interference.

Cage's stance echoes similar concerns expressed by other actors, particularly in the voice acting industry where AI-generated recreations of performances have become more common, even in major video games. Voice actors like Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) have openly criticized AI's impact on their profession, highlighting the threat of lost income.

The film industry itself is divided on the issue. While director Tim Burton expressed unease with AI-generated art, Zack Snyder advocates for embracing AI's potential rather than resisting it.
