My First Adult LEGO Purchase Was This Mario Set and I Have No Regrets

Author : Ethan Apr 01,2025

As a practical person, my spending habits are usually focused on essentials, with the occasional splurge on a discounted video game. However, last year marked a shift in my perspective when I considered purchasing a LEGO set, something I hadn't done since childhood. The allure of LEGO sets, despite their high cost, eventually led me to buy the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, which had been on sale since October of the previous year for under $50. It was the perfect addition to my desk, serving as a unique potted plant.

My interest in this set was sparked after reading IGN's review of the Piranha Plant build. Being a long-time fan of Mario games, this set seemed like the ideal way to showcase my affection for the franchise. While LEGO's botanical line offers beautiful flower sets, none capture the whimsical yet slightly menacing charm of the Piranha Plant.

Having built the set, I'm thrilled to have it on my desk. It transports me to the Mushroom Kingdom, where I imagine tending to my Piranha Plant during work hours. The building process was enjoyable and challenging, taking just one afternoon to complete. This is currently my only LEGO Nintendo set, but the experience has me eager to expand my collection.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?

LEGO sets, especially those aimed at adults, can be quite pricey, with some reaching over $200. It's important to balance the joy of owning a beloved set with financial responsibility. The LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, priced under $50, was a justifiable purchase for me. The hours spent building it and the daily happiness it brings me are well worth the cost. For me, $50 is the sweet spot for indulging in a LEGO set I love.
