Nexus Mods is implementing age verification requirements for European and British users
Last month, Nexus Mods founder Robin "Dark0ne" Scott announced his planned departure from daily operations, stating this move served both his and the community's best interests.
These upcoming changes aren't driven by new ownership but represent compliance with legal mandates - specifically the UK's Online Safety Act and EU's Digital Services Act.
The company clarified: "As a UK-based business, we're legally required to remove illegal content and implement additional safeguards limiting minors' access to adult material."
"We faced two options: completely eliminate adult content for UK/EU users or modify our policies through measures like age verification," Nexus explained. "Since adult content forms an integral part of our platform, removal wasn't viable. We understand some users may find these adjustments inconvenient, but they're necessary to maintain legal hosting privileges."
The platform will soon release finalized Adult Content Guidelines but confirmed immediate plans to update Terms of Service with clearer definitions of prohibited content under UK law and enhanced child protection measures.
"Our existing rules already prohibited such content, but we're strengthening the language for absolute clarity," Nexus stated. "All users will receive notifications when these changes take effect."
Additional security upgrades include: Automated detection systems for illegal/abusive material (with immediate removal and reporting to authorities) Revised adult content tagging Enhanced blocking/muting tools Improved spam filters
Age verification will eventually apply to most adult content for UK/EU users exclusively. The team noted: "Our current age confirmation method remains unchanged unless future legal requirements mandate adjustments."
