Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090: 32GB GDDR7 Memory and 575W Power Draw
Leaked specifications suggest Nvidia's upcoming flagship GPU, the RTX 5090, will feature a substantial 32GB of GDDR7 video memory—double that of the anticipated RTX 5080 and 5070 Ti. This high-performance card, however, demands a significant 575W power supply. The official unveiling of the entire RTX 50 series, including the RTX 5090, is scheduled for Nvidia's CES keynote on January 6th, 2025.
The RTX 50 series, codenamed Blackwell, represents Nvidia's next-generation graphics card lineup, arriving more than two years after the RTX 40 series launch. Leveraging Nvidia's Tensor Cores for AI processing, the RTX 50 series will incorporate DLSS upscaling, ray tracing, and PCIe 5.0 support (where compatible). This new generation will replace the RTX 40 series (some models of which, like the RTX 4090D and RTX 4070, have already been discontinued) and compete directly with AMD's Radeon RX 9000 series and Intel's Battlemage GPUs.
Pre-CES leaks from Inno3D, an Nvidia AIB partner, revealed details about their iChill X3 RTX 5090. This triple-fan card, occupying over three expansion slots, confirms the 32GB GDDR7 memory and the substantial 575W power draw—a considerable increase from the RTX 4090's 450W.
The RTX 5090: High Memory, High Cost
Key features of the RTX 5090, as per Inno3D's leak, include:
- 32GB GDDR7 video memory (double the anticipated capacity of the RTX 5080 and 5070 Ti).
- A 575W power draw, necessitating a high-capacity power supply.
The RTX 50 series will utilize a 16-pin power connector, though adapters will be provided. While performance promises are impressive, the RTX 5090 is expected to command a premium price, potentially starting at $1999 or more. Nvidia has yet to officially confirm pricing.
The full RTX 50 series, including the RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti, will be unveiled alongside the RTX 5090 during Nvidia's CES presentation on January 6th at 9:30 PM Eastern Time. The market's response to this new generation remains to be seen.
