Get ready for an epic crossover! Magic: The Gathering and Final Fantasy are joining forces this June in a new Commander set featuring four preconstructed decks, each themed around a different mainline Final Fantasy game: 6, 7, 10, and 14.

Deck Themes and Design Choices:

Each deck's design draws heavily from its source game's lore and characters. While Final Fantasy VII's deck primarily follows the original game's narrative, it incorporates the aesthetic enhancements of the Remake trilogy. Final Fantasy VI's deck, referencing the game's pixel art and limited concept art, even involved collaboration with the original game's team to ensure faithful representation.

The choice of characters for each deck also involved careful consideration. While Cloud (FFVII) was an obvious choice, other selections involved brainstorming sessions. The Final Fantasy XIV deck, for example, focuses on Y'shtola during her Shadowbringers arc.

Gameplay and Color Identity:

Each deck's color identity and gameplay mechanics are strategically chosen to reflect the source game's themes and mechanics. For instance, Final Fantasy VI's deck emphasizes graveyard recursion, while Final Fantasy X's deck uses a white-blue-green strategy inspired by the Sphere Grid leveling system.

Beyond the Commanders:

The decks aren't just about the main characters. They feature a wide array of beloved Final Fantasy characters, both heroes and villains, as legendary creatures and in spell art.

Release and Availability:

The Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy set launches June 13th. Each of the four Commander decks will be available in regular and Collector's Editions (featuring Surge foil treatment). The full interview with Wizards of the Coast's Daniel Holt and Dillon Deveney provides further insights into the development process.
