Lollipop Chainsaw Returns with Sequel and Anime Spin-Off After 12-Year Hiatus
The cult classic hack-and-slash is making a comeback with a new video game installment developed by Dragami Games, the successor to original publisher Kadokawa Games. Notably, the studio recently released the Lollipop Chainsaw RePop remaster for modern platforms.
The 2012 original gained a dedicated following with its unique blend of cheerleader protagonist Juliet Starling battling zombies through colorful, over-the-top combat. The project boasted an impressive creative team, including director Suda51 (No More Heroes) and writer James Gunn years before his mainstream success with Guardians of the Galaxy and DC films.
Fan Response Shapes Development
Despite selling 1.5 million units total (with 1.24 million from the original release), last year's RePop remaster received mixed reactions. Players expressed disappointment over missing licensed music and the canceled remake approach that was initially planned.
The sequel announcement specifically mentions incorporating fan feedback into development. While original key staff members are returning, neither Suda51 nor Gunn appear involved in this new project.
Staying True to the Original Vision
Dragami Games promises to maintain the franchise's signature dark humor and distinctive style: "The development process will prioritize staying true to the original's tone, without imposing excessive creative restrictions regarding DEI considerations."
No release window has been announced for Lollipop Chainsaw 2. Alongside the game, an anime adaptation is also in development, though details remain scarce.
