Today's Mario Kart World Direct shed new light on the game's innovative Free Roam mode, revealing how it integrates multiplayer aspects and what activities players can engage in across Mario Kart World's expansive open world.
While we had the chance to go hands-on with Mario Kart World last week, it wasn't until today that we truly explored the ins and outs of Free Roam mode. This new feature allows players to freely navigate across a vast, Forza Horizon-inspired world map. Unlike previous Mario Kart games where race tracks were isolated and accessible only during races, Mario Kart World seamlessly integrates these tracks into its open world. This setup enables players to drive from one track to another in specific game modes and enjoy the open spaces in between. When you're not in the midst of a race, Free Roam mode offers a chance for a mini-adventure. The world is dotted with hidden collectibles such as coins and ? panels, though their specific purpose remains a mystery for now. You'll also find P-Switches scattered throughout, which, when activated, trigger small challenges like collecting blue coins.
Moreover, Free Roam mode introduces a Photo Mode, allowing you to capture your racers in various poses and angles at any time. But Free Roam isn't just for solo players; it's a social experience as well. You can explore the world with friends, taking photos, tackling challenges, or simply hanging out. The mode supports up to four players on the same system through split-screen, and up to eight players via local wireless play, with two players per system.
The Mario Kart World Direct also unveiled a host of other exciting details, including new characters, courses, and modes. To stay updated on all the announcements, you can find comprehensive coverage right here.
