Pokémon TCG Pocket Debuts Amid Fan Protests

Author : Natalie Jan 10,2026

Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket finally launched its anticipated trading feature today, but the update has faced even harsher criticism than expected—despite player backlash when Creatures Inc. first revealed the restrictive mechanics last week.

Frustrated players have flooded social media, calling the trading system overly complex and riddled with unnecessary limitations. While some restrictions were disclosed in last week's announcement, others—like the cryptic requirement to "consume items to trade"—only became clear with the update's release.

Unlike the Wonder Pick feature or opening booster packs, every trade now demands two separate consumable resources. First, players need Trade Stamina, which slowly regenerates or can be refilled using Poké Gold (premium currency). Second—and far more controversial—is the mandatory use of Trade Tokens.

Trade Tokens

The real controversy stems from Trade Tokens, required for swapping high-value cards: 120 tokens for a 3-Diamond card, 400 for a 1-Star card, and 500 for a 4-Diamond (EX Pokémon) trade. These tokens aren’t earned—they’re obtained by sacrificing cards from your collection. For example, dissolving a 3-Diamond card yields just 25 tokens, while a 1-Star card gives 100. The rarest Crown cards (1500 tokens) require months of play to obtain.

This creates absurd exchange rates—players must sacrifice five EX Pokémon just to trade one, or five 1-Star cards (the highest tradable rarity) for a single 1-Star swap. Even rarer cards, like 3-Star immersive art variants (a major selling point for the game), don’t provide enough tokens for equivalent trades.

'A Monumental Failure'

"This update is downright insulting," wrote Reddit user hurtbowler in a viral post. "The greed is staggering—I won’t spend another cent. They should remove 'Trading' from the title; it’s false advertising." Others mocked the system as "hilariously toxic," noting it takes 15 seconds per card conversion—meaning minutes of menu navigation for a single trade.

Many suspect the restrictive design intentionally discourages trading to preserve revenue. With players previously spending upwards of $1,500 to complete sets, the new system forces continued pack purchases rather than card swaps. As one commenter noted: "This isn’t sustainable—if you want to trade, prepare to buy endless packs."

Pay Day

The update arrives as Pokémon TCG Pocket reportedly earned $200 million in its first month—before trading existed. Players now speculate the feature was designed solely to monetize card exchanges, especially since higher rarities (2-Star+) remain untradable—forcing reliance on paid booster packs.

Some hope for adjustments, suggesting Trade Tokens as mission rewards. But with Creatures Inc. remaining silent after promising to "evolve with player feedback," frustration grows. As the game prepares to introduce Diamond/Pearl-era Pokémon tomorrow, this botched trading launch threatens to overshadow its next major update.

Finally Trade is here.... wait What?

Creatures Inc. Stays Quiet

Despite pledging transparency last week with a "we hear you" statement, Creatures Inc. has yet to address the widespread backlash. IGN has requested comment on whether changes are planned, but players remain skeptical—especially since Trade Stamina (a likely revenue driver) may dominate future rewards over the desperately needed Trade Tokens.
