PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not for Long)
The PlayStation 5 disc drive is currently available at select US retailers, including Amazon and PlayStation Direct, as of mid-January 2025. However, given recent trends, this limited stock is expected to sell out quickly.
The scarcity stems from the release of the PS5 Digital Edition in 2020 and, more recently, the PS5 Pro in November 2024. Neither the Pro nor the Digital Edition includes a built-in disc drive, leading many users to purchase the attachment separately. This demand has outstripped supply, particularly in the US, creating a persistent shortage.
While some retailers have restocked, the availability remains precarious. As of January 15th, Amazon and PlayStation Direct offer the drive for its MSRP of $79.99. A third-party seller on Walmart is also offering it, but at a significantly inflated price of $122 (with limited stock).
Where to Buy (as of January 15th):
Store | Price |
---|---|
Amazon | $79.99 |
PlayStation Direct | $79.99 |
Walmart (Reseller) | $122 |
PlayStation Direct Purchase Limits:
PlayStation Direct limits purchases to one disc drive per customer, a common practice to deter scalpers.
The ongoing shortage, also affecting the UK since late 2024, is likely linked to the PS5 Pro's lack of a disc drive option. Gamers seeking the best PS5 experience with physical media must purchase the drive separately, fueling the high demand.
With major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy still showing the drive as out of stock, the shortage is far from resolved. The duration of this scarcity remains uncertain.
