The Future of GTA Online After GTA 6's Release: What We Know
The impending release of GTA 6 in Fall 2025 has left many GTA Online players wondering about the fate of their long-standing investment in the game. With GTA Online's continued profitability and popularity, concerns are rising that the launch of a potential "GTA Online 2" might leave the original version obsolete.
This question of whether Rockstar will abandon the original GTA Online was posed to Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick. While he avoided specifics regarding any unannounced GTA Online sequel, he offered insight based on Take-Two's handling of NBA 2K Online.
NBA 2K Online, launched in 2012, saw the release of NBA 2K Online 2 in 2017. Significantly, both versions continued to operate concurrently, ensuring players of the original game weren't left behind. Zelnick stated, "Generally speaking, we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles...We did not sunset Online 1. They both are still in the market and they serve consumers and they're alive and we have this massive audience. So we've shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them.”
This suggests that a potential GTA Online 2 might not replace the original. Continued player engagement with the current GTA Online could lead Rockstar to maintain support for both versions.
However, much remains unknown about GTA 6. With only a trailer and a release window confirmed, Rockstar needs to provide more details soon, especially considering the proximity of the anticipated release to other major game launches, such as Borderlands 4.
