Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross: A Marvel Snap Card Analysis
Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross, the Captain America: Brave New World character portrayed by Harrison Ford, is the newest addition to Marvel Snap. While his star power is undeniable, his in-game impact requires closer examination.
How Thunderbolt Ross Works
Ross is a 2-cost, 2-power card with the ability: "When your opponent ends a turn with unspent Energy, draw a card with 10 or more Power." This mechanic, similar to Red Hulk and High Evolutionary effects, hinges on card draw, a potent element in Marvel Snap. However, the restriction to cards with 10+ power significantly limits his utility.
Currently, this includes cards like Attuma, Black Cat, Crossbones, Cull Obsidian, Typhoid Mary, Aero, Heimdall, Helicarrier, Red Hulk, Sasquatch, She-Hulk, Skaar, Thanos (if generated), Orka, Emperor Hulkling, Hulk, Magneto, Death, Red Skull, Agatha Harkness (if generated), Giganto, Destroyer, and The Infinaut. Most decks contain only one, if any, of these high-power cards. Therefore, Ross's effectiveness is directly tied to deck composition. His value increases proportionally to the number of 10+ power cards included. Deck thinning is also a beneficial side effect.
Red Guardian serves as a direct counter to Ross.
Optimal Deck Synergies
Thunderbolt Ross finds a home in Surtur decks. A sample Surtur deck including Ross might look like this (note: this list contains several Series 5 cards):
- Zabu
- Hydra Bob
- Thaddeus Thunderbolt Ross
- Armor
- Cosmo
- Juggernaut
- Surtur
- Ares
- Attuma
- Crossbones
- Cull Obsidian
- Skaar
This deck aims to play Surtur on turn 3, boosting its power with 10+ power cards, and making Skaar free. Juggernaut, Cosmo, and Armor provide crucial end-game control. Ross significantly enhances this strategy by drawing key high-cost cards. However, the high Series 5 card count makes it less accessible to newer players. Substitutions for Hydra Bob (Iceman, Nico Minoru, Spider-Ham) and Cull Obsidian (Aero) are possible.
A Hela deck also benefits from Ross:
- Black Knight
- Blade
- Thaddeus Thunderbolt Ross
- Lady Sif
- Ghost Rider
- War Machine
- Hell Cow
- Black Cat
- Aero
- Hela
- The Infinaut
- Death
This deck focuses on discarding high-power cards of varying costs to be revived by Hela. Ross improves consistency by drawing these high-power cards. Black Knight and Ghost Rider provide early-game power. War Machine is replaceable with Ares or Swordmaster. This deck also features Series 5 cards (Black Knight, War Machine).
Is Thunderbolt Ross Worth the Investment?
Currently, unless you're a dedicated Surtur/Ares player, Thunderbolt Ross might not be a worthwhile investment if resources are limited. His value is contingent on future card additions and the meta's evolution. The prevalence of Wiccan decks, which encourage players to spend all their energy each turn, further diminishes his effectiveness.
