Splash Damage Scraps Transformers: Reactivate After Lengthy Development
After a prolonged and challenging development process, Splash Damage has officially canceled its Transformers: Reactivate project. This news follows a cryptic trailer reveal at The Game Awards 2022, which generated excitement for a 1-4 player online game featuring Autobots and Decepticons uniting against a new alien threat. While leaks suggested a roster including iconic characters like Ironhide, Hot Rod, Starscream, and Soundwave, and even hinted at Beast Wars inclusions, the game will not see release.
The decision to cancel, as stated in a Splash Damage tweet, was difficult and may unfortunately lead to staff layoffs. The studio expressed gratitude to its development team and Hasbro for their contributions. Fan reaction has been varied, with some expressing disappointment, while others anticipated cancellation given the lack of updates since the 2022 trailer.
Splash Damage is refocusing its efforts on "Project Astrid," a AAA open-world survival game built with Unreal Engine 5, announced in March 2023 in collaboration with streamers Shroud and Sacriel. Resources will be redirected to this new project, but the cancellation of Transformers: Reactivate will result in job losses within the studio. For now, Transformers fans remain without a new AAA title featuring the beloved Robots in Disguise.
