Michael Douglas Unlikely to Return as Hank Pym in Marvel, Says He's 'Had the Experience'

Michael Douglas, renowned for his role as Hank Pym in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Ant-Man series, has hinted that his days in the MCU might be over. Having made four appearances on the big screen, including the latest, "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" in 2023, and a cameo in "Avengers: Endgame," Douglas expressed his doubts about returning for the upcoming "Avengers: Doomsday."

In a recent interview with Deadline, when asked about reprising his role, Douglas stated, "I don't think so. I had the experience, and I was excited to do it." His comments suggest a contentment with his time in the franchise and an eagerness to move on. Douglas has mostly retired from acting, with his Marvel roles being among his few recent big-screen appearances, while he remains active as a producer with over a dozen credits to his name.

Reflecting on his time with Marvel, Douglas mentioned the novelty of working with green screen technology, saying, "I'd never done a green screen picture before. But I'm enjoying my hiatus and enjoying my life. It was overwhelming running the production company and acting at the same time." He also expressed a past desire for Hank Pym to meet a dramatic end in "Quantumania" to heighten the stakes for Paul Rudd's Ant-Man, a narrative choice that Marvel ultimately did not pursue.

The future of the Ant-Man series remains uncertain following "Quantumania's" underwhelming box office performance. While Paul Rudd is set to return in "Avengers: Doomsday," the rest of the Ant-Man family, including Douglas's Hank Pym, Michelle Pfeiffer's Janet Van Dyne, and Evangeline Lilly's Hope Van Dyne, may not join him. Lilly announced her departure from acting in June 2024 to focus on her family, further diminishing the likelihood of her character Wasp appearing in the upcoming film.

As for what fans can expect in "Avengers: Doomsday," recent leaks from the set have revealed a surprising return of a location seen in "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier," adding an element of intrigue to the film's setting and storyline.
