The news that Final Fantasy XIV (or 14 if we're not going by Roman numerals) was coming to mobile was rightly met with huge excitement. And if you're hungry for more details, you won't need to wait long, because a new, official interview with producer and director Naoki Yoshida has just been released that gives the inside scoop on the upcoming port.

Naoki Yoshida needs little introduction for longtime Final Fantasy fans, but for those not familiar his leadership is what is often credited with reviving FFXIV after a disastrous launch. And while it's almost certain it was a team effort, there's no doubt Yoshida's experience and tenure at Square Enix are still impressive, and he had a significant contribution to reviving the MMORPG.

The most interesting revelation from this interview is perhaps that a mobile version had been considered for longer than most might expect, however, it had been initially dismissed as impossible. But after speaking with folks from Lightspeed Studios, it seems a new deal was struck when it became clear it was possible to translate Final Fantasy XIV faithfully to mobile.

Finality

Final Fantasy XIV transformed from a cautionary example of a franchise's difficult MMORPG adaptation, into a genre cornerstone. With its mobile arrival, many, ourselves included, eagerly await details on Eorzea's mobile impact.

Some may be disappointed by its non-identical adaptation, intended as a "sister title" instead of a mainline equivalent. However, for mobile players, Final Fantasy XIV Mobile promises a highly-anticipated release.
