Game Introduction
Phỏm (also known as Tá lả or Tứ lơ khơ) is a popular Vietnamese card game, especially in the northern regions. The names "Phỏm" and "Tá lả" distinguish regional variations. The objective is to form sets of cards ("Phỏm") and minimize the points of remaining unpaired cards. Using a standard 52-card deck, Phỏm offers diverse gameplay, making it a favorite for family gatherings and celebrations.
Key Terms:
- Phỏm: Sets of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, or three or more cards of the same rank.
- Junk Cards: Cards not part of any Phỏm.
- Ù: A player with three Phỏm (no junk cards) wins immediately.
- Stomach (Cơ): The remaining undealt cards.
- Móm: When a player cannot form any Phỏm at the end of the game.
- Take the Pin (Ăn Cược): Taking an opponent's discarded card in the final round.
- Send (Đánh Chuyền): Discarding a card that completes an opponent's Phỏm in the final round (this card doesn't count against the player's score).
- Compensation (Bù): A player who takes the pin and is subsequently beaten by a player achieving Ù must compensate the winner. Three consecutive cards also trigger compensation.
- Re (Rút): If a player's discard allows another player to make a move, the discarded cards are returned, and that player gets another turn.
Gameplay:
- Players: 2-4 players. The dealer (or previous round's winner) receives 10 cards; others get 9. Remaining cards form the "Stomach."
- Turns: Play proceeds counter-clockwise, starting with the player holding 10 cards.
- Playing Cards: The first player discards a card. Subsequent players can take the discarded card to complete a Phỏm, or draw from the Stomach. After taking/drawing, a card is discarded.
- Game End: The game ends when a player achieves Ù, or after four rounds if no one achieves Ù.
- Final Round: Players must complete their Phỏm, send cards where possible, and discard their remaining card(s).
- Scoring: If no one achieves Ù, points are tallied based on remaining junk cards (A=1, J=11, Q=12, K=13). Lowest score wins. Specific point adjustments exist for various game scenarios (winning, placing, taking/receiving pins, Ù).
Scoring Summary:
- 1st Place: +6 points
- 2nd Place: -1 point
- 3rd Place: -2 points
- 4th Place: -3 points
- Taking the Pin: +4 points
- Receiving the Pin: -4 points
- Ù: +15 points (other players lose 5 points each)
- Móm: -4 points for the winner.
