Russian Checkers 8×8
In Russian checkers, the game begins with the white player's move, and pieces are restricted to dark squares. A mandatory rule is capturing an opponent's piece when possible, which can be done both forward and backward. The king's versatility allows it to move and capture diagonally across any distance. The Turkish strike rule applies, limiting the capture of an opponent's piece to once per move. When multiple captures are available, players have the flexibility to choose any option, not necessarily the longest. Upon reaching the opponent's back rank, a piece is crowned a king and may continue to move as a king in the same turn if possible.
A draw can be declared under several conditions:
- If a player, with checkers and three or more kings, fails to capture one of the opponent's kings within 15 moves after the balance of forces is established.
- If, in a game with only kings, the balance of forces remains unchanged for 30 moves in 4 and 5 piece endings, or 60 moves in 6 and 7 piece endings.
- If a player, with three pieces of any combination against a single opponent's king on the "high road," cannot capture it within 5 moves.
- If both players only move kings for 15 consecutive moves without moving any regular checkers or capturing.
- If the same position repeats three or more times, with the same player to move each time.
International Checkers 10×10
International checkers also start with a white move on dark squares, with the mandatory capture rule in place, allowing captures in any direction. The king's movement remains unrestricted along diagonals. Similar to Russian checkers, the Turkish strike rule limits captures to one piece per move. However, the majority rule mandates selecting the capture that results in the highest number of opponent's pieces taken when multiple captures are available. If a regular piece reaches the opponent's back rank during a capture sequence, it does not become a king until its move is complete, allowing further captures as a regular piece. Once a piece becomes a king by reaching the back rank, it can only move as a king on its next turn.
