Obsidian's Avowed has launched in early access, immersing players in the Living Lands. Exploration promises magical discoveries, perilous encounters, and, surprisingly, potential romance.
Prior to release, Obsidian stated Avowed wouldn't include a dedicated romance system, prioritizing "thoughtful relationships" with companions instead. Avowed Game Director Carrie Patel, in an IGN interview, explained this decision: "We are building thoughtful relationships with our companion characters," she stated. "While I personally favor offering romance as an option, a successful implementation requires significant commitment to ensure authenticity and engaging gameplay. Therefore, it's not a feature in Avowed, but I wouldn't rule it out for future titles."
However, early access players and reviewers are reporting at least one companion, Kai, demonstrates romantic interest in the player character. Significant spoilers regarding Kai's interactions follow. Proceed with caution.
